Model Bootcamp was a success!

Posted on August 24, 2009

This last weekend I held my first New Model Bootcamp and it went very well! In conjunction with SIM Agency and some of the new talent in town we had a great bootcamp. We covered runway techniques, on-camera shooting and posing and general industry knowledge. I am still going through so many images as we had over 23 students.  I will be holding another workshop possibly early next year. Special thank you to Britnee (you remember her from the last post and seen below) and Rene Sweeny for all their help and demonstration. It’s going to be a great season with all of these fantastic new models! OgieKanogie.com, Bath and Body Works and Glam Lounge all dontated wonderful gifts to the bootcamp attendees. Here are some shots from the day. (Below is Justine with Makeup artistsLinda Wagner, Cassidy (left), Kyle (middle) and Zandrea (right)

Bellies, bellies, everywhere!

I have so many mothers-to-be around me! Two of my good friends are having babies. The shots in this posting are from my session with my high school friend Jamie. She’s having her second baby but her oldest is 12! Baby Iris will be making her debut on early October. This is another session at The Farm. Total coincidence because I have had a few session in between. I just managed to land back here since my last post. It’s okay because I love shooting there. Aside from the ants and bug bites I always leave with, it is very peaceful. I struggled with the lighting this day. Normally I do very well shooting into the sun but I could not get my camera to focus to save my soul. I worked in manual focus a lot. Normally not a big deal but when starring into the sun, it can be difficult to find your focal point.

Here is my beautiful friend Jamie and her pretty belly .

Sometimes it just clicks..

So as many new photographers do…sturuggle is unavoidable. I struggled to get my name out there, I struggled to learn the mechanics of the camera, I struggled to let go of perfection and expecting perfection, I struggled with getting things to people in a timely manner…I struggled with every facet of my business. The hardest part of being an artist is believing in yourself. Not just the “I can do it” but getting past that and to the “I am good enough for…”

I hear a lot of people say that I am “fresh” and my work has so much “life” to it. I never really knew what that meant. I looked at my work and all I saw was the bad lighting and lack of knowledge I needed to get a great image. Something clicked today. Could have been that I had a great model, could have been that I put my camera down for over a week. I am not sure. I just know that in editing a few images from today’s shoot I discovered that I do in fact believe in myself. I am proud of whatever style my work has found it’s way to. I know that I will always grow and therefore always struggle to some degree. I am self taught, I am winging this and I do not have to be any other photographer but the one I already am. Sounds deep I know, it’s taken me over  a year to get to that realization. I am still 98 percent natural light. I still have yet to let the whole artificial lighting thing absorb fully. I rely on other people’s knowledge for success with that . One day I won’t…baby steps.

Here are some shots from today. You may remember Britnee from the amazing big bridal shoot we had. She was the “wheel bride” and the one with the flower frame in the current Phoenix Bride and Groom spread. She was a pleasure to get one-on-one time with. This was just a favor I did for her but I think that it turned out to be a blessing for me.
